Lot 420
A Confederate Named Gettysburg Soldier Belt, Frame and Cartridge Box, c. 1861, stenciled "W. Estes" on inside of pouch flap, faintly signed "W.E." on inside of belt, cartridge probably made by Gaylord, with brass finial and tin containers, standard issue brass frame Note: W.T. Estes was in Co. A of the 11th Miss. Regt., known as the "University Greys", all members of which were students from the University of Mississippi or locals from the surrounding area. According to records, W.T. Estes was killed at or near Gettysburg. The rig was found in Fayetteville, along the westward route of Lee's retreat. Interestingly, the folded corner of the front flap is probably not a condition issue, but rather something soldiers intentionally did to gain easier access to their cartridges.
