Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston Gold Presentation Walking Stick, inscribed on top, "Presented to Gen. Joe[seph] E.[ggleston] Johnston By his Friends in Louisville, KY. 1870", in the reserves below; "Presented by", "Genl. Johnston's Family to", "E.J. Harvie/1891", "E.J.H. to J.R.H./1892", and "J.R.H. to E.H.J./1930", length 34 3/4 in. Provenance: General Joseph E. Johnston by gift to, Colonel Edwin J. Harvie (1835-1911) to his daughter in 1902, Jane Rutherfoord Harvie (1865-1930), thence by descent in the family. Note: Joseph Eggleston Johnston (1807-1891), was a career U.S. Army officer, fighting in the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars and was the most senior U.S. off icer to join the Confederacy. Although criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis and others for his perceived lack of aggression, Johnston earned high respect from his adversaries Sherman and Grant. After the war, Johnston served in Congress and as Commissioner of Railroads. He died after serving in inclement weather as pallbearer for his former foe, William T. Sherman.
