After leaving his position as Art Editor for the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Nichols traveled south to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Guatemala. In this charming scene of "Pirogue in the Swamp", Nichols painted a local fisherman as he deftly navigates through the dense bayous of Southern Louisiana. In the upper left, a white heron takes flight away from the approaching pirogue.
