Stanton as Secretary of War, with green paper seal, War Department docketing notations at upper left, 18 3/4 in. x 14 3/4 in., folded, matted and framed. Provenance: Estate of James Fenimore Cooper IV Note: Born in 1821 in Rockland, Maine, Dr. William A. Banks went out with the Fourth Maine as surgeon and later as Assistant Surgeon of U.S. Volunteers. After the war he was port surgeon of the Marine Hospital Service in Rockland, Maine, where he died in 1893. Provenance: Estate of James Fenimore Cooper, IV.
