Description:

Dutch School, 18th c., "The Village Kermesse", oil on canvas, unsigned, 25 3/4 in. x 34 in., framed. Note: Kermesse is a Dutch term derived from kerk (church) and mis (mass) that originally referred to the celebratory mass said on the anniversary of the founding of a church, parish, or in honor of a patron. It soon became more generally used to refer to a village-wide festival accompanied by feasting, dancing, and sports competitions. Beginning in the Netherlands and in Northern France, the tradition of Kermesse soon progressed across Europe, where it exists to this day.
