Lot 154
Description:
Elizabeth Fisher Washington (American/Pennsylvania, 1871-1953), "Garden Landscape", oil on canvas affixed to board, signed "E. F. Washington" lower left, 13 1/2 in. x 14 in., framed.
- Notes: Note: Elizabeth Fisher Washington was the great-great-grandniece of President George Washington and, therefore, a member of the Colonial Dames of America and the Magna Carta Dames. She studied art at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts under such illustrious teachers as Hugh Breckenridge, and won a prestigious traveling scholarship, which allowed her to study in France. Her technique of painting, which differs greatly from Breckenridge's neo-impressionist style, is nonetheless impressive with her subtle use of color and composition that forms the complex scene of the present lot. The colors and shapes lead the eye around the canvas in a manner that could only be accomplished by a gifted artist. Elizabeth Fisher Washington's paintings have been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Design, New York.
