Ellis Wilson (American, 1899-1977), "Machine Shop", oil on panel, signed lower left, 19.5in. x 15.25in. E6000/9000 Note: African- American artist Ellis Wilson was born in Mayfield, Kentucky and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. A nationally acclaimed artist, Wilson earned an honorable mention award from the Harmon Foundation in 1933 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1944. He was particularly known for his social realism paintings of life in Harlem and Southern Blacks working in the fields. The painting "Machine Shop" is listed in Theresa Cederholm's book, Afro-American Artists: A Bio- Bibliographical Directory. Wilson's work is represented in noted collections, including Amistad Research Center, New Orleans, Howard University Gallery of Art and National Museum of American Art.
