Description:

Important American Federal Inlaid Cherrywood Tall Chest of Drawers, early 19th c., cove-molded cornice, three short over five graduated drawers, chamfered stiles, spurred "French" feet, h. 65 1/2 in., w. 44 1/2 in., d. 22 1/2 in. Note: The cove-molded cornice, style and execution of inlaid decoration, drawer configuration, spurred French feet, and the use of cherry and poplar relate this tall chest to several other Pennsylvania examples made in the Federal style circa 1800. Interestingly, nearly identical cherrywood tall chests have been attributed to Lancaster County, PA. The contrasting diamond inlay on the frieze, double band-inlaid drawers, and chamfered stiles inlaid with an interlacing string pattern bespeak a distinctive refinement of this tall chest from. Lying eighty miles west of Philadelphia, Lancaster County became the center of a regional school of cabinetmaking during the late 18th century.
