Description:

Louisiana Ladderback Child's Chair, 19th c., turned finials, tapered stiles, spindled arms, turned uprights, original rawhide seat, h. 22 1/2 in., w. 13 in., d. 11 1/4 in. Provenance: Found in New Roads, LA. Note: The finials, cylindrical upward-tapering stiles, arched and slightly bowed slats, rawhide seat, and hand-formed seat rails on this chair relate closely to those on several well-known slat-back chairs from the Acadian prairie. Interestingly, certain more complex carved elements on this chair, including the spindled arms and swelled uprights, are not seen on the other illustrated chairs, perhaps indicating the work of a yet unidentified craftsman.
