Gu Fang (Chinese, active 1690-1730), "Village Landscape", ink and color on silk, signed and sealed upper left, collector's seal lower right, 67 3/4 in. x 19 1/2 in., framed and glazed.
- Notes: Note: Gu Fang, from Huating, Jiangsu Province in China, was a student of the pre-eminent artist Wang Hui (1632-1717), one of the so-called "Four Wangs" of the Orthodox School of Qing Dynasty painting. Gu accompanied his teacher to Beijing and assisted on commissions for the Kangxi emperor. In accordance with accepted practice, Gu studied and copied illustrious works by the old masters, often painting in the manner of a specific ancient master. The "blue-green" in the hills and mountains of the work offered here reference earlier, Tang-dynasty paintings.
