Description:

George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, 1944-2013), "Bayou Morning #2", 1969, oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed, dated, titled and "George Rodrigue Studio & Gallery, Lafayette, LA" stamps and business card en verso, 12 in. x 18 in., original frame with brass artist and title plaque. Note: In March 1967, George Rodrigue returned to his hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, where he had been studying traditional painting techniques, abstract expressionism, pop art and hard edge painting. On the long drive from California, Rodrigue absorbed the landscape of Route 66 and was struck by the differences he encountered upon crossing from Texas into Louisiana: the flat land, miles of waterways, massive oaks blocking out the sky and light filtering through the tree branches. Determined to discover his own way of capturing Louisiana on canvas, Rodrigue first spent several months carefully observing the well-known landscapes by Richard Clague, William Buck, Andres Molinary and others in the Louisiana State Museum and New Orleans Museum of Art. Combining his recent studies in school with his reflections on the European-style landscapes of the 19th century artists, Rodrigue spent 1968 to 1971 crafting his unique vision of Louisiana. The very early works included elements such as small figures or cabins, as seen in the work offered here. However, Rodrigue quickly dropped these elements in favor of simply the oak tree, a graphic element that became a hallmark for the artist. The painting offered here has a jewel-like quality and rich surface that depicts a landscape obviously both familiar and beloved by the artist. The canvas is significant window into the development of the twenty-five year old Rodrigue into an artist that would come to define Louisiana landscape painting in late 20th century.
