Description:

George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, b. 1944), "4 Roses for me Tonight " oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed, titled and dated "2008" en verso, 48 in. x 60 in., framed.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Purchased from the artist.
  • Notes: Note: Louisiana-born Cajun artist George Rodrigue's iconic Blue Dog series continues its popularity into the twenty-first century with variations on pop art themes. Over the years, several themes have evolved alongside the Blue Dog series. Instead of depicting the Blue Dog in a landscape, Rodrigue began featuring her with repetitive items, and sometimes abstract images, such as candles, eyes, and swirls (representing Louisiana's hurricanes), in the background. The roses illustrated in this painting were also a part of this shift in Rodrigue's work. Wendy Rodrigue writes in her blog, Musings of an Artist's Wife, "It was in the Blue Dog Series, particularly beginning in the mid-1990s with the silkscreens and later in the more abstract original paintings, that flowers became an important and frequent design element." Works such as Red Flowers for a Blue Lady of Mine, 1999, Peep-Eye with the Poppies, 2000, Springtime in Louisiana, 2005, and Alice in Wonderland, 2009, confirm the fact that these flowers, as an aspect of design, are an important part of Rodrigue's Blue Dog series, constituting "at least one out of every twenty paintings over the past fifteen years."
