Description:

George Rodrigue (American/Louisiana, b. 1944), "I've Lost My Pirogue: Blue Dog Series", oil on canvas, signed lower left, signed, titled, and dated "1992" en verso, 24 in. x 20 in., attractively matted and framed. This painting dates from 1992, the same year as Rodrigue's Absolut Vodka national ad campaign, which also utilized his now famous "Blue Dog." The artist and his dog have been featured in numerous exhibitions, most recently the retrospective, George Rodrigue's Louisiana: Forty Years of Cajuns, Blue Dogs, and Beyond Katrina, at the New Orleans Museum of Art March 1-June 8, 2008. Provenance: Purchased from the artist, Lafayette, Louisiana. Reference: Ginger Danto and George Rodrigue, The Art of George Rodrigue, (New York, 2003). Note: "I've Lost My Pirogue" is an early work within Rodrigue's "Blue Dog" series and serves as a bridge between his earlier Cajun-themed paintings and the new "loup-garou", or Cajun werewolf, series. The transitional nature of this painting is evident in the use of a dark, brooding Cajun landscape more typical of Rodrigue's earliest work to serve as a backdrop to the vibrant iconic "Blue Dog" of his later pop series. Even the title plays with the intertwining of the past and present.
