New Orleans Coin Silver Presentation Cup, c. 1855, Adolphe Himmel (1825/6-1877) for Hyde & Goodrich, wc. 1828-1861, marked "HYDE & GOODRICH" in arc, above "H", above "NEW ORLEANS" in complementary arc, baluster form with grape and grapeleaf chasing, beaded lip, hollowcast C-scroll handle with thumbpiece, applied flared foot with leaf and inverted papyrus border, engraved "Carrie Brewer/ from/ her Godmother" in script, h. 4 1/2 in., wt. 4.55 troy ozs Provenance: Descended in the family of Carrie Brewer, born 1859, daughter of Maria Louisa McDaniel (1859-1898) and Lorenzo Daniel Brewer (1822-1859) of St. Francisville, LA. Lorenzo Brewer was a successful attorney who died in the February 1859 explosion of the steamboat Princess on the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge. Note: Similar grape and grapeleaf chasing is seen on the Himmel for Hyde & Goodrich pitcher illustrated on p. 52 of Crescent City Silver. An identical leaf and inverted papyrus foot rim is found on the cream jug illustrated p. 47 of Crescent City Silver.
