Description:

Ida Rittenberg Kohlmeyer (American/New Orleans, 1912-1997), "Terminus No. 1", c. 1966, oil on canvas, signed lower right, label with title en verso, 69 in. x 69 in., original frame. Provenance: Henri Gallery, Washington, D.C., 1966; Barbara Walker Gordon Collection. Note: In 1966-67, Ida Kohlmeyer created a series of large abstract paintings featuring broad expanses of white ground, narrow vertical stripes (often positioned right at the edge of the canvas), and a few geometric forms to carefully ground the composition. The painting offered here, “Terminus No. 1,” is a fine example of her work from this period. A large orb with several vertical rectangular forms dominates the composition and is connected by a narrow green line to the cluster of complementary forms that Kohlmeyer has placed right at the edge of the canvas. This canvas represents a very successful and complex body of work that she created for only a brief period.
