Description:

Jacques Guillaume Lucien Amans (French, 1801-1888, active New Orleans 1836-1858), "Portrait of a Louisiana Gentleman", oil on canvas, signed "Amans" upper left, 36 in. x 28.75in., in a period frame. E10000/15000 Note: Born in the Netherlands, Jacques Amans was trained in the prevailing French neoclassical tradition of portrait at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Amans began traveling regularly to New Orleans for the winter season in 1836 seeking portrait commissions. By the early 1840s, he assumed the role as the most celebrated portraitist in Louisiana. Although the identity of the sitter in the "Portrait of Louisiana Gentlemen" remains unknown, he is most likely a successful planter or businessman. Amans has beautifully rendered the portrait, placing emphasis on draftsmanship and realism. Similar to his portrait of "Charles Urquhart", Amans has the gentleman seated in a period Empire style armchair with his finger holding his place in a book.
