James "J.P." Scott (American/Louisiana, b. 1922), "Family Reunion, Lafitte, LA 70067", found materials sculpture, 23 in. x 50 in. x 28 in. E5500-7500 Provenance: Knobe Galleries, Atlanta, Georgia, 1998. Note: The African American self-taught artist James "J.P." Scott was born in the small rural Plaquemines Parish community of Orina, where he attended school only up to the sixth grade. In 1962 he moved to Lafitte and began to create his lively sculptures of boats, oil rigs, airplanes and French Quarter houses from pieces of savaged cypress, assortment of found objects and left over paint. From his personal experiences of living on the bayous of Southern Louisiana and working on commercial fishing boats, Scott developed a particular fascination with boats. Working in outdoors in his backyard, he did not initially intended on selling his boat sculptures. Inclusion in the "Passionate Visions of the American South" organized by New Orleans Museum of Art and "Rambling on My Mind: Black Folk Art of the Southwest" organized by the Museum of African American Life and Culture in Dallas helped to solidify his career as an important Southern folk artist.
