Description:

William R. Jauquet (American, b. 1945) "Noah's Ark", cedar wood carving sculpture, 1985, 35 in. x 37 in. x 11 in. E14000-18000 Provenance: Purchased from the artist, Denmark, Wisconsin, 1988. Note At the request of his wife, William Jauquet carved a swan figure for her antique store. This appears to have been a defining moment for the thirty-five year old Wisconsin real estate broker, thus beginning his new career as a folk art sculptor. Working with cedar native to Wisconsin, his charming na‹ve sculptures are characterized by simple fluid lines and shapes. Horses were always a favored subject for the artist, but gradually he progressed to large complex group scenes including Noah's Arc. A one-man show sponsored by the American Folk Art Museum in 1985 attracted national attention to the artist. In the early 1990s, Jauquet gave up wood carved sculptures to work exclusively on bronze sculptures and paintings.
