Description:

John McCrady (American, 1911-1968), The Wreck of the Old '97, conte crayon, unsigned, 10.375in. x 17.875in. E2500/4000 Provenance: The Estate of John McCrady. Note: Running behind in schedule on September 27, 1903, the engineer for the mail train No. 97 was trying to make up time when the train jumped the seventy-five foot high trestle. A tragic disaster, nine members of the crew was killed and seven seriously injured. This wreck was immortalized by a ballad recorded by Vernon Dalhart that became the first million-selling record in the United States. This is the preliminary drawing upon which John McCrady's 1942 lithograph entitled The Wreck of the Old '97 is based. McCrady chose to depict the train as it was rushing towards its inevitable destruction on the trestle.
