José-Maria Cundin (Spanish/Louisiana, b. 1938), "La Cuadrilla de Luis Araquistain: Postales Taurinas Series (Luis Araquistain's Group: Bullfighting Postcards Series)", 1965, oil on canvas, signed and dated mid-right, "Orleans Gallery Royal Street, New Orleans" label with title en verso, 34 1/8 in. x 50 1/4 in., framed. Note: Born in the Basque Country of Spain, Cundins work often references his culture and the turbulent history of the region. Cundins paintings are infused with wit, intriguing text and frequently, mysterious narratives. In work offered here, the costume of the matador figure and the painted scroll offer a clue to the scene, translating to Don Louis Araquistain, Maestro Bullfighter, Honored and Famed in the Art of Bullfighting. The Basque Country has long had close ties to bullfighting. Bilbao has a museum dedicated to the sport, and the famous Pamplona Running of the Bulls takes place in Basque Country. Rather than the conventional Spanish bullfight however, the Basque version is a more acrobatic style often referred to as the Basque-Navarra style, or recortes, where the performer leaps over and around the charging bull. In this painting, Cundins figures float and twist through the air with the text intertwined throughout the composition in a style reminiscent of Basque bullfighting. An important early work for the artist, this painting was featured in Cundins first exhibition at the noted Orleans Gallery located at 527 Royal Street.
