Note: Chicago-born artist Susan Downing-White has spent most of her life in the South, living both in New Orleans and Mobile. She studied art at the University of South Alabama as well as Auburn University. Downing-Whites airy canvases focus on the sky, coast, and light. The overgrown marshes and coastal scenes found near her home in Mobile provide inspiration for her luminous landscapes. When asked about her artistic process, Downing-White explains, The skies interest me most. They change and express mood. In the painting offered here, the horizon line lies low on the canvas so as to enhance the focus on the breathtaking sky. The crisp white clouds are warmly lit from underneath by a hidden setting sun, hanging suspended in the striking blue field of sky and sea over Lake Pontchartrain. Ref.: Kemp, John. R.
