Karel Van Falens (Dutch, 1683-1733), "A Courtly Couple Receiving a Noble Visitor at a Castle in the Mountains", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 14 in. x 18 1/4 in., in a Louis XV style carved and molded frame.

  • Notes: Note: Falens studied with Constantin Francken (1661-1717) in his hometown of Antwerp. In 1703 he moved to France with his wife, the daughter of the French sculptor Sebastian Slodtz (1655-1726 ) Falens was appointed painter to the King and in 1726 was made a member of the Academy of Paris. His works are in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Louvre, the Hermitage, the Dresden Civic Museum, and the National Museum of Warsaw, among others. Reference: Bénézit.
