Bernard Pothast (Belgian, 1882-1966), "The New Pet", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 28 in. x 36 in., in a later giltwood frame bearing label of "Traxel Galleries, Cincinnati".
- Provenance: Provenance: Mrs. A.W. Shell (handwritten label en verso).~ Note: Pothast was known for his sentimental depictions of peasant life, particularly intimate interior scenes of mothers and children. His works are often bathed in a golden glow that add to the sense of warmth and intimacy created by the artist. Born in Belgium, Pothast studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris under Gabriel Ferrier (1847-1914), and later at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. It is believed that he frequently used his wife and children as models.
