Description:

Knute Heldner (Swedish/New Orleans, 1875-1952), "French Market Scene with a Mother and Child", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 31 1/2 in. x 29 1/2 in., period frame. Provenance: Neal Auction Company, Apr. 16, 1994, lot 330. Note: Knute Heldner is known for his impressionistic depictions of Louisiana bayous and the historic French Quarter. He also painted a small body of figural compositions that are equally successful. The sublime work offered here depicts a young woman with her son seated next to her, selling fruit in a stall in the French Market. By all accounts, Heldner was a deeply religious man. The painting here aesthetically evokes the Virgin Mary and Jesus, with the shawl draped over the woman’s head and the boy leaning onto her arm. Heldner renders the scene with brilliant color and expressive brushwork, including the vibrant life of the Vieux Carré on the street in the background.
