Description:

Maruyama-Shijo School, 19th c., "Saru Kani Gassen or The Quarrel of the Monkey and the Crab", ink and color on silk, signed and sealed middle right, 39 1/8 in. x 13 3/4 in., mounted as a hanging scroll.

  • Notes: Note: The "Tale of the Monkey and the Crab" has many variations in Japanese folklore. By most accounts, a sly monkey tricks a crab into giving him a rice ball in exchange for persimmons. The monkey then kills the crab, and the crab's offspring exact punishment on the monkey. Though many of the facts change throughout history, Saru Kani Gassen is a story based on retributive justice.
