Smith has been documenting the many facets of the New Orleans jazz community, Mardi Gras and the cultural traditions of the African-American community for over thirty years. During his prestigious career, Smith has earned two Photographer's Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. his photographs are in the permanent collections of the Biblioteque National in Paris, Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Historic New Orleans Collection and Louisiana State Museum. Smith is the author of numerous books including Spirit World, A Joyful Noise: A Celebration of New Orleans Music, Mardi Gras Indians, and New Orleans Jazz Fest.. A Pictorial History. Smith has exhibited his work nationally at the Smithsonian Institute and National Museum of American History. Most recently hcsehad a major retrospective at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center This outstanding selection of vintage prints represents the diversity of Michael P.
