Noel Rockmore (American/New Orleans, 1928-1995), "Alcide ŒSlow Drag¹ Pagaveau, Bassist (1888-1969)", oil on canvas, signed, titled and dated "March 19th, Œ63" upper right, with a "Vincent Price Collection" label bearing the title en verso, 52 1/4 in. x 32 1/4 in., in a period frame.

Provenance: Reproduced in Preservation Hall Portraits: Paintings by Noel Rockmore, by Larry Borenstein and Bill Russell, published by Louisiana State University Press, The Eureka Brass Band Section, 1968. Note: Bass player Alcide "Slow Drag" Pavageau was one of many engaging and talented musicians who played at Preservation Hall in the French Quarter during the 1960s. A member of the Eureka Brass Band, Pavageau had toured with both Bunk Johnson and George Lewis. Known as the "official grand marshal of the second line," Noel Rockmore painted a somber "Slow Drag" dressed in tuxedo tails, a derby hat and sash holding a flower-decorated umbrella, as if he is ready to lead a celebratory procession down the street.
