- Notes: Note: A student of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) and Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant (1845-1902), Cullen Yates was well educated in the arts. Yates studied not only with these illustrious painters, but also attended the National Academy of Design, the École des Beaux-Arts, and the Academy Julian. His landscapes of familiar locations in the North East, such as the lot presented here, won him multiple prizes in exhibitions such as the St. Louis Exposition, the Boston Art Club, and the National Arts Club throughout his lifetime. He was elected as an academician of the National Academy in 1919.
