Description:

Paul Ninas (American/New Orleans, 1903-1964), "Dominica", oil on canvas, unsigned, 30 1/4 in. x 40 in., framed. Provenance: Estate of the Artist, Le Mieux Gallery, New Orleans, LA. Note: After years traveling throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa, before settling in New Orleans in 1932, Paul Ninas owned a plantation on the island of Dominica, part of the Lesser Antilles and located approximately 400 miles southeast of Puerto Rico. Having been greatly influenced by the works of Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse, who also painted in tropical locales, Ninas found the landscape, the people, and the way of life of Dominica inspirational. Using a painting style reminiscent of Gauguin, yet clearly influenced by the cubist movement, Ninas combines both static and fluid elements into his composition. This painting technique works well with a palette consisting of mostly monochromatic greens and browns, yet incorporating pops of red, which draw the eye around the scene of the daily life of the people of Dominica.
