Polk documented life in Alabama from 1920 to 1984. For more than four decades, Polk was chairman of the photography department at Tuskegee Institute. At the same time, he maintained a professional photography studio. Polk's photographs focused on southern life including families, politicians, dignitaries and rural communities.
