Description:

Qi Baishi (Chinese, 1864-1957), "Flowering Peony with Bumble Bees", ink and color on paper, signed and sealed upper left, 39 1/8 in. x 13 1/8 in., framed and glazed.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Exhibited Beijing c. 1946/1947; with Chinese WWII Lieutenant General Hu Bohan (1900-1973), General Officer Commanding 8th New Army (1944-1945)); thence by descent to the current owner. Note: Credited with having internationalized the traditional Chinese aesthetic, Qi Baishi is considered China's most celebrated modern master. During the beginning of the 20th century, a division emerged between Chinese artists who sought to preserve their heritage in the face of rapid Westernization and Chinese artists who advocated reform through the adoption of foreign techniques. Qi Baishi experimented with many different styles of painting from the West, but it was under the strong influence of the Chinese Ming and Qing masters, Xu Wei and Bada Shanren, that he was able to develop his own Individualist modern style. Using free-handed, broad strokes in the spirit of the Da Xie Yi painting style combined with bewitching washes of color, Qi uniquely captures the essence of his subjects.
