Description:

Thomas Hicks (American/Pennsylvania, 1823-1890), "Normandy Girl", oil on panel, signed "T. Hicks" and dated "1879" upper right, 12 1/4 in. x 9 1/2 in., framed; with Certificate of Appraisal and Authentication.

  • Notes: Note: Born in Bucks County, PA, Thomas Hicks began painting as early as 1836, receiving lessons from his cousin, artist Edward Hicks. After studying at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Hicks traveled through Europe and studied with Thomas Couture in Paris. This charming portrait of a girl in Normandy captures Hicks' attention to detail in his paintings, such as the carefully rendered brickwork of the building and the traditional Norman costume that the girl wears.
