Thomas Jefferson, 3rd President, An engraved, document signed as president commissioning John Harrison a Surgeon's Mate in the U.S. Navy, Counter signed by R. Smith and dated 11th, April, 1804 Paper seal affixed. E6000-9000 Note: John Harrison, Surgeon U.S. Navy was the father of John Hoffman Harrison who was born four years after this commission. The younger Harrison came to New Orleans from Baltimore. He was one of the original founders of the Medical College of Louisiana which was eventually to become Tulane Medical School.
