A Mangbetu Carved Ivory Trumpet (Namburuse), Democratic Republic of Congo, carved of hollowed tapering cylindrical form following the natural arch of the tusk, the embouchure on a raised plane with six grooved rows on either side, height 16 1/2 in., presented on stand.

  • Notes: Note: Ivory trumpets such as these were used to accompany courtly dances; they signaled the king's "comings and goings" and announced his military victories.
