Description:

The "Houmas House" Paris Porcelain Three-Piece Reticulated Table Garniture, mid-19th c., comprising a large centerpiece and a pair of compotes, each marked "Houmas" in the reserve, with bleu royale and gilt decoration, floral embellishments, height 15 3/4 in., width 18 in., compote height 9 1/2 in., diameter 9 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: This table garniture relates closely to a Paris porcelain partial dinner service by Edouard Honoré, sold by Neal Auction Company May 18, 2003 at the Houmas House Plantation & Gardens Auction as lot 726 The highly decorative reticulation, molded base and floral embellishments suggest this garniture to be mid-19th c. Interestingly, the cartouche reserves, "Old English" gilt script, and bleu royale and gilt decoration on both the aforementioned service and the garniture set are essentially identical. Houmas House Plantation was established in the mid-18th c. with Maurice Conway and Alexander Latil's purchase of the land from the native Houmas Indians. The original French provincial home erected by Conway and Latil is now adjacent to the large plantation home begun by the subsequent owner, General Wade Hampton, and continued by his daughter Caroline until its completion in 1828 John Burnside purchased the home in 1857 Ownership passed from Burnside to Colonel William Porcher Miles in 1881 The home fell into disrepair following the 1927 Mississippi River flood, until preservationist and collector, Dr. George B. Crozat, began a long period of restoration in 1940 Mr. Kevin Kelly purchased Houmas House in 2003 and has not only revitalized the historic house and grounds, but has reinvigorated the River Road, by making Houmas House his main residence.
